This is the most comprehensive photographic record ever published of the place now known as Jakarta. From the late 1850s, when the earliest known photographs of the city were taken, through the closing years of the 19th century, one hundred and fifty-five rare photographs from leading institutional and private collections are brought together here for the first time.
