The art of the Batak tribes of the mountains of northern Sumatra has been admired by collectors and scholars since the 19th century. However, only a limited number of pieces have been published over the years. This lavishly illustrated book, which includes literally hundreds of previously unpublished masterpieces of Batak sculpture from the Delta Collection, has changed that forever. This volume is enriched by insightful information from Achim Sibeth, one of the world’s leading experts of Batak culture and art. A visual tour de force, this book is a milestone in publications on Southeast Asian and Indonesian tribal arts.
Achim Sibeth
Achim Sibeth pursued art history and cultural anthropology at the University of Freiburg, where he developed an interest in Indonesian culture, especially that of the Batak, Javanese and Ngadha of Central Flores. A prolific scholar, he has done extensive fieldwork in Indonesia, and written several important books on its art and culture. Notably, he is well-respected for his expertise on Batak art and sculpture. He has also organised acclaimed exhibitions of traditional and contemporary Indonesian art. He has held the position of curator at the well-known Linden Museum in Stuttgart, and is now with Frankfurt’s World Museum.
