The House of Men
As skyscrapers rise in Port Moresby, the peoples of the interior teeter on the brink. Daniel Vigne traveled through the highlands and the Sepik valley, meeting tribes separated by everything, to observe their wars, their arts, their beliefs, and to enter those men's houses where initiation and scarification rites are passed down. He recounts a world on the edge of collapse, caught between its traditions and the gold mines eating away at its lands.
The author is Daniel Vigne, the director of The Return of Martin Guerre. He went to Papua to film two documentaries, Papous, mémoire des boucliers and Papous, entre deux mondes, and brought back this account, somewhere between a travel diary and a filmmaker's perspective on societies described as "primitive" and which mining greed is driving to extinction.
