Prague Sketchbook
For this title, it is the Canadian Tom Mairs who keeps the sketchbook. A watercolorist and theater set designer based in Berlin with a long-standing attachment to Prague, he paints the city like a set designer: the play of Gothic spires, Baroque facades, and narrow streets in the morning mist. The text is by Jaroslav Kalfar, a writer born in Prague who moved to the United States, author of the novel Spaceman of Bohemia, which was adapted into a film by Netflix. Here, he recounts the city of his childhood and the bond that still ties him to it. Two ways of loving Prague: that of the artist who came from elsewhere, and that of the child who left it.
